JUNE 2019

Church Family,

Summer is officially here! For many of you, that means a change in rhythms and schedules as well as vacations. That is true for me personally and for The Journey.

I will be on vacation with my family celebrating our 30th anniversary in early June, and then beginning July 1st, Amy and I will be on sabbatical until August 11th. After almost seven years on staff, The Journey has graciously given us 6 weeks to rest and recharge. We would appreciate your prayers during this time, specifically that we would be able to fully unplug and return with a refreshed excitement for the work of ministry. I am grateful for the time away and confident that you will be in great hands with our West County staff and elders.

We are praying this summer will be a season of rest and refreshment for you as well. You will see further down in the newsletter that our church leadership is intentionally planning to alter our rhythms and schedules throughout the month of July. Let this be a time of increased connection with one another and with the Lord. Often, it’s when we slow down that we can more easily hear His still, small voice.

We will miss you throughout the summer, but are excited about what the Lord will do in all of us over the coming months!

Pastor Scott

We're launching into a new summer sermon series this week – looking at what it means to have a summer well spent. We'll focus on topics like rest, relationships, community, and more over the next couple of months. We're excited to see you this weekend as we dive into this new series!
One way we hope to lean into what it looks like to live an intentional lifestyle of rest and relationship is through community-building opportunities and experiences both at The Journey and across the St. Louis metro area. Here are two upcoming dates for the month of June – mark your calendars! View a full list of summer opportunities here.
Kingdom Sessions Release Concert | June 7, 8 p.m.
Tower Grove Worship Leader Russ Mohr is debuting "The Kingdom Sessions" album on June 7 at The Ready Room! The record explores themes of faith, community, justice, love, forgiveness, and reconciliation – celebrating what is good and beautiful in humanity while confronting and lamenting what is broken, all while looking with hope to a better future. Check The Journey St. Louis app for more info, to learn how to receive a free download from June 14-30, and to purchase tickets to the show!

Alethea Film Screening | June 21, 7-9:30 p.m.
The Journey is partnering with the Alethea Project, a new documentary screening series taking place in large evangelical churches across the United States. It seeks to use nonfiction film as a means to encourage productive, civil dialogue around difficult social topics, model bridge-building between churches and secular arts organizations, and grow appreciation for the art and craft of nonfiction film. We'll screen The Interrupters at The Journey Hanley Road in June! Stay after the film for a moderated discussion. Register today

School's out and Journey Students has a fun-filled summer ahead! If you're entering or exiting 6th-12th grade, come hang out on Sunday evenings at Schroeder Park. There are also a few special events and even a summer camp! Check out our full calendarand follow us on Instagram for the latest updates! @JOURNEYSTUDENTS_WC

Have you noticed the In the Community, For the Community section of our website and app? It's a listing of events here in Manchester and Ballwin, most family-friendly, some 21+, but all providing us with perfect opportunities to engage culture in fun and practical ways, from concerts and movies in the park to family Nerf wars!

In the spirit of rest and relationships, we're shaking things up at West County! During the month of July, service times will be shorter and from 9:30-10:30, we'll have a special time of fellowship each Sunday. Those attending 1st service are encouraged to hang around and those attending 2nd service are encouraged to show up early!

July 7 - popcorn/candy bar & board games
July 14 - popsicles & ice breakers
July 21 - Chex mix & yard games
July 28 - smoothies & karaoke

* Please note: During service, childcare will be available for Nursery Suite, Jr. Toddler, and Toddler rooms only.

And here's a Spotify playlist with some of our Journey July worship songs!

We’re currently in what architects refer to as the design/development phase and are working with a team of staff and lay people to determine, now with more specific numbers, the scope of this project. Part of this process has included visiting some existing student and children spaces, and we are reaching out to other ministries in the area to find out what has worked well and what they might improve about their spaces.

We’re hoping to have some working renderings by the end of June that will be sent out to contractors for precise bids and estimates. Once all of that data is collected, we’ll re-evaluate again based on costs and money that has been either received and/or committed. It seems fairly realistic that by this fall, we will have a clear plan of action.

If you have questions about this project, don't hesitate to reach out by emailing beyond@thejourney.org

As we head into the end of our fiscal year this month, please join us in praying about going above and beyond with a generous fiscal year-end gift by June 30.
