Southern Illinois October Newsletter

By The Journey on October 1st, 2017

This month, The Journey - Southern Illinois celebrates its 5th anniversary. Like many milestones in life I have mixed feelings about reflecting on our history. On one hand, it seems like just yesterday we were setting up and tearing down for our first services at The Pavilion. While on the other hand, it seems like we have been at this work for decades.
However, when I do think about our church’s story one common theme jumps out every time. It is simply this; the Lord is Faithful! As I think through stories I am familiar with, the theme is always God At Work. God works on behalf of His people in such a way that only He gets the Glory. Many times the story seems to make no sense when you are in the thick of it. For instance, when you think about the Israelites standing at the Red Sea wondering what they were going to do, you have to admit that it was a fair question to ask why God would go to the trouble to rescue them from Egypt if he was just going to kill them in the desert? Later we see what God was up to. He was allowing things to stack up in such a way that the only way out of this mess was for Him to step in and do something that only He could do. He wanted to prove to His people that they really could trust in Him and that He would be with them always.
We at the Journey SI haven’t seen Pharaoh and his army barreling down on us with nowhere to run, but we have been in a battle. Ephesians 6 makes it clear that we are struggling against forces far greater than flesh and blood. We are fighting a spiritual battle and for our young church there has been a couple of times where it seemed like defeat might be imminent. Yet God has proved faithful and brought us through.
I believe our story has become one where only God gets the Glory now. It’s no longer about the awesomeness of this new church and its resources and gifts. It is now only about God’s provision, even in the midst of messy beginnings God has used our church to change lives. Many of you reading this are among those that can honestly say that God used the ministry of this church to save your souls and restore your lives. Lets take some time to reflect back on the ways God has blessed each of us over the last 5 years and then lets pray for our future.
I believe He has our best days ahead of us. I believe He has opened up doors for us to bless our region and the nations. I am looking forward to writing a reflection in another 5 years and recounting all the ways God has used our church in people’s lives.
