Dear Metro East Family,

You have a reason to rejoice today, a reason to believe the Lord is for you and with you, a reason to believe that God is sovereign despite whatever circumstance or challenge you’re facing, and a reason to walk in peace. What is that reason? You woke up.

I’ve been reading through the Psalms this past month, and I was struck with this simple truth in Psalm 3:5. David says, “I lay down and slept: I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.” If you’re like me, going to sleep and waking up the next day doesn't typically lead me to worship or faith. So far, I’m about 12,000 for 12,000 on that, give or take a few nights, and what I usually want when I wake up is to go back to sleep. It’s commonplace for me.

But for David, this was something miraculous. He was surrounded by thousands of enemies when he went to sleep that night before he wrote Psalm 3 and understood that he might not wake up the next day, let alone get a restful night of sleep. Yet the Lord provided both.

The good news is we’re not David. We probably don’t have thousands of enemies surrounding us, or a kingdom to lead, or a psalm to write. But we do have the same God, who designed us with the same needs, the same type of fragile body, and placed us in a world like David’s that we do not control.

David’s words revealed to me something about myself, so often when I’m troubled or anxious, I long for a sign or some great clarity and answer to my prayer. That happens sometimes but often it doesn’t. Instead God gives me his everyday grace. For David, it was a restful night of sleep. For others, it may be food on the table, a friend’s kind words, a moment alone with the Lord, or beautiful weather that makes one marvel at God’s creation. How he reminds you doesn’t really matter, the point is to remember the Lord is for you and he demonstrates that in hundreds of “little” ways every day. Do you have eyes to see it and a heart to believe it?

A good nap didn’t solve David’s problems (but sometimes it does); when he awoke, he saw that there were still “thousands of people who have set themselves against me” Ps 3:6. But he wasn’t afraid, because he knew who was for him. And he knew because he drew on the fresh grace and mercy for that day. If the Lord sustained his life that night, he could do it again in the day.

So my encouragement to you is to look for those everyday examples of the Lord's grace and faithfulness to you. Write a new one down every day for a month. You may be surprised how those evidences that the Lord is for you compound into you trusting Him in big ways.

Even if you can only stop by for 30 minutes or you can stay the whole time, it takes a community to do things like this!

We had a huge success at our Connect Fair! Our raffle winners are Chris Hartman, Daniel Bertelsen, Bill Revis, and Marc Dontigney. See Corrinne for your prize!

We believe the Bible clearly communicates baptism as a vital step of discipleship and obedience to Christ. The sacrament is a symbol of the washing away of the old self and commitment in front of fellow believers that you have been made new by Jesus and are committed to following him.

Join us for the class right after service on September 29th. Our next baptisms are on October 6th.
