Hanley Road Family,

We live in a day and time where most of us are busy. Sometimes, days can be so hectic that it can even be hard to carve out time to eat! We may have to settle for lunch on the go or grab something quickly as we hustle from one thing to another. In times of extreme busyness, our hunger can hit us a like a ton of bricks as we realize that we haven’t taken the time to properly nourish our body. In those moments, however, we don’t tend to feel guilty and beat ourselves up over skipping a meal. We don’t mope about and say, “How could I have missed lunch! I’m such a loser!” When we realize we are hungry, we simply go and eat.

This same busyness and grind that can cause us to miss a meal can also cause us to miss our time with the Lord. We may have put our time with Jesus on our calendar or set an alarm clock, but something comes up or we oversleep. Now what? Do we beat ourselves up or get weighed down by guilt because we missed time with the Lord?

It is counterproductive to be weighed down by guilt for missed prayer or devotional time. In fact, Satan often uses our guilt for not praying to keep us in perpetual prayerlessness. We didn’t pray, so we don’t pray. Rather than feel guilty for missing prayer time, Scripture tells us to feel thirsty. The psalmist writes, "As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God." (Psalm 42:1-2) Jesus is the bread and water of life (John 6:35; 7:37), and we should allow our spiritual emaciation to drive us to the feast of the word of God and the fountain of His grace. When you’ve been out of the presence of the Lord, don’t let guilt keep you from Him. Just hurry back into His presence and be refreshed by His grace. So if your devotional rhythms are not all they should be right now, child of God, don’t feel guilty; feel hungry.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Carlos
