Dear Hanley Road Family,

I hope you and your family and friends enjoyed a wonderful Christmas!

As we look to 2020 and I reflect on the month of December, I'm grateful for how we experienced an Advent season through our "He Stepped In" sermon series. We were reminded of the ways that God steps into the painful and broken parts of our lives and brings us hope and healing. We came face to face with the nature of our God - a real God who steps into real need. My prayer for you, as we've come to the close of this series, is that you have been able to tangibly experience the love, joy, peace, and hope that Jesus offers.

At the beginning of our Advent series, we invited you to consider ways you could step into the needs of others in response to the goodness and generosity of Jesus. I want to thank you for the ways you stepped in throughout this season – following along with us in our Advent devotional, sharing a meal with church family and friends through Open Table, and stepping into the the needs of our city through our A Gift for Our City offering. We were able to be a blessing to the Grace and Peace Women’s Shelter in a substantial way and enable them to continue meeting the needs of vulnerable women in our city. In addition, you all went above and beyond in blessing 16 families from Pershing Elementary School through our Adopt-A-Family initiative this season! Thank you!

As we anticipate a new year, I want us to consider how we can look beyond this Advent season by continuing to be a people and a church that steps into places of need in our community through how we engage, serve, and give.

  • I pray that we would engage by continuing to support the families of University City through our partnership with the UCity School District.
  • I pray that we would seek to serve through continuing to partner with the Grace and Peace Women’s Shelter during this winter season.
  • And finally, I pray that we would seek to be a generous people by each taking a step in giving of our resources both consistently and sacrificially to meet the needs of our church and community and to further learn what it means to be a people who grow in our trust and dependence on the Lord.

One of the things I recognize is that in order for us to grow in these ways, we must first begin by posturing our hearts in prayer before God. So as we enter into January, we are going to place an emphasis on prayer and seek to grow as a church in what it means to trust the Lord in every area of our lives. I want to invite you today to begin to pray for your heart and our church in these ways. As we enter this New Year, please seek the Lord on behalf of Hanley Road and her leaders, asking the Lord to make clear to us His will for His church. Specifically, let us ask what does it mean for Hanley Road to truly be a congregation that is in the community, for the community, and of the community in this New Year.

In Christ,
Pastor Carlos

Journey family! I’m incredibly grateful for your heart and generosity expressed on Christmas Eve. Together, we were able to give $96,285 away to organizations across our neighborhoods and communities that are committed to bringing restoration to St. Louis. Thank you for stepping in on behalf of our city!

Know that each and every gift – regardless of the size – is deeply appreciated. We know that any gift, any step toward generosity, is an opportunity for the Lord to grow our faith and to use what we have given to bring hope and healing to those in need. My prayer is that the ways you have expressed generosity this season will have sparked in you a joy that comes from experiencing partnership with our God in the ways He uses your resources, hands, and hearts to transform the lives of others.

May we continue to be reminded as we enter 2020 of the goodness, kindness, and generosity of our God and persist in faithfulness as we respond to Him by taking more steps of love, sacrifice, and generosity in the year ahead.

Pastor Curtis

Parents and caregivers are invited to join us for the GROW conference! We will explore the science of healthy relationships and address parent-child relationships during difficult and emotional times. Explore topics of theology and the church with the folks that share your pew every week. Our second round of Equip Classes kicks off February 2nd, to be held in between services. Various church leaders will teach three equip classes: Core Christianity II, Dear White Christian - A Book Study by Aaron Layton, and "Africans Against the World: How The Resolve of African Christians Shaped the Church's Story." Each class ranges from seven to ten weeks.
Ladies, come rest and reset together in the New Year on January 18th. Our theme during this time will be "Abiding in Christ," led by Luisa Loredo.
If you love to sing and worship, we would love to have you join our choir! Our choir joins the normal Sunday worship team to sing once a month. Everyone is welcome to join (Kids will need an accompanying adult), and there is no audition. Please email our Worship Leader, Jason Magers, if you are interested or for more information.
Community groups are a way for people in our church to meet once a week outside of church to study the Bible, pray, and share life. Oftentimes, these groups meet at homes or at the church and meet during various nights throughout the week. We have a need and an opportunity for more people to lead community groups. If you'd like to learn more, please email infoHR@thejourney.org
Theology at the Bottleworks is a monthly public discussion that takes up the important issues of our times among an amazing diversity of interesting people and views. We consider it a modern day “Mars Hill” (see Acts 17). We'll be meeting on Wednesday, January 15th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood.

Join the conversation this month for our topic: Fashion: More than meets the eye? Why do we wear what we wear? What values do our clothes reflect? What affects your purchase choices? Come on out to have a brew, share your view, and lend an ear to others.'

The Host team seeks to create an inviting environment for people to meet Jesus and connect with each other on a Sunday morning. Hosts help connect people and conduct service logistics, so services can run smoothly. Entrance greeters, coffee connectors, and communion set-up folks are just some of the roles that we can take for granted every Sunday, but this team is essential for embodying love for our church. If you're interested in learning more about this team, please email Patrick Arthur.
Hanley Road folks regularly volunteer at Pershing Elementary's after school Homework Club. This will be our third semester! Whether you're a long-time volunteer or you're hearing about this for the first time, we invite you to our interest meeting on January 19th at 10 a.m. Read more about this opportunity to support our UCity schools by clicking the button below.
Our first volunteer date to serve a meal at the Grace and Peace Women's Shelter is quickly approaching. Join us February 5th or February 20th for an opportunity to share in fellowship with these women. (Click on each underlined date to read more!)
We have several meal trains opened for families with newborns! And you don't have to be a chef to help out! Whether you're dropping off a homemade meal or sending a restaurant gift card, these families are truly grateful. Sign up for a date here. If you are expecting a little one of your own, email infohr@thejourney.org, so we can get a meal train set up for you in time!
