Susan and I sit very near the front during worship, and every Sunday, we experience the worship team up close and hear the whole congregation singing behind us. We find joy in those moments, as we feel united with, and encouraged by, our sisters and brothers in Christ. It’s participatory. We are in it together. As a church family, worshipping together is a glimpse of how things are meant to be and how things will be.

We are among the oldest folks at Hanley Road and are long-time members. With many of our congregants starting careers and families, following job prospects, or simply graduating college, seven or eight years of membership is above average! I think of this when we see so many young and new folks come forward for communion. In a short eight years, we’ve seen many graduations, new jobs, marriages, and new babies in our congregation. Yet even with such full lives, our young people are eager and faithful servant leaders.  That is very encouraging. The gospel of Jesus Christ has always been carried forth in each new generation, but this one feels special to me. We are so thankful for the Body of Christ at Hanley Road. Body of Christ is a common phrase, but the sanctity of the Body of Christ seems real here and now at The Journey at Hanley Road.

Leadership is not easy, and living under leadership is challenging too! In our church, I hope, pray, and feel that we are in it together. Your elders, pastors, staff, deacons, and many lay leaders desire even deeper community. They want to share abundant life with you and receive the grace of you being among us. We can bear each other’s burdens, cry and rejoice, and walk together to bless each other, glorify God, and share the hope and faith we have.

Thanking God for you all,
Rich and Susan Pierce

Hosted at The Journey Tower Grove

Join us for the Empowered to Connect Conference Simulcast and experience practical teaching in a safe and supportive community as we learn together and work to equip families, churches, and professionals to better serve children impacted by adoption and foster care.

During our Sunday morning services, the Hanley Road door and the coat closet door will remain locked for security purposes. In light of the recent tragedy in Pittsburgh, Kol Rinah wishes to further our security measures in the building, especially for their children's Sunday school class. Moving forward, the Amherst-side and main parking lot doors will remain open to guests. You may also see a second guard within the building on some mornings. We apologize for any inconveniences but very much want to respect and support our Jewish neighbors.

If you have any questions about security, please email

Discipleship groups are new here at The Journey Hanley Road, and they might be perfect for you or someone you know. These groups are for newer Christians, those looking to renew their commitment to following Jesus, or anyone asking the question, “What does it practically look like to follow Jesus?” These groups will be very small (3-5 people) and will focus on passing down the Christian faith from one believer to another.

If this resonates with you or you feel that someone you know would benefit from this experience, please reach out by emailing, or register here. This group will be flexible with regards to logistics (day, time, and frequency), so personal schedules are not a barrier.

Our hospitality ministry is looking for more of our church members to prayerfully consider joining our Host Team! This ministry provides the opportunity to serve within the service you regularly attend. Whether you prefer interaction with attenders or more logistical tasks, or want to serve twice a month or once every few months, we have opportunities across the board. Here are some roles you could fill as a host:

Connecting with People:

  • Door greeting and passing out bulletins
  • Brewing coffee and mingling with attenders at our full-service coffee bar
  • Sanctuary greeting; welcoming and connecting with attenders before the service
  • Connecting with new families at the Welcome Center

Service Logistics:

  • Setting up/cleaning up the communion table
  • Assisting with parking signs and directing cars prior to services
  • Counting offering
  • General sanctuary, bathroom, and coffee area clean up

Plus, we like to have fun and build community within the team! We’ve hosted bonfires, bbqs, and a trip to The Muny. These are optional but can be another great way to live out our mission of enjoying grace and embodying love together!

Interested in learning more or talking through your preferences in serving? Email Courtney Godfrey.

Interested in joining right away? Email Ellen Rohman, so she can get you on the PCO schedule and set you up for training with one of our service leaders on your first day!

Theology at the Bottleworks is coming up on February 20, 6:30-8:30 at Schlafly Bottleworks.
