Hanley Road December Newsletter

By Hanley Road on December 1st, 2017

Oh come let us adore him.

Advent is for the adoration of our Lord Jesus. This season belongs to Him. And it is very good to aim our mind, heart and attention at Christ. One way to incline ourselves to Him is through a daily reading of twenty five short devotionals that spring straight from the scriptures.

The Dawning of Indestructible Joy by John Piper has been my companion through Advent the last two years — this little devotional book is for “reminders and stirrings.” If you will commit to one reading daily (takes about seven minutes) I’m sure that Christ will dwell richly within you. You download it for free.

To feel the wonder of God’s infinite greatness and infinite goodness through the story of Christmas can be challenged and even dulled by many things. St. Peter wrote with this assumption when he said “I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder” (2 Peter 3:1).

Let us, church family, pray, asking God to help us comprehend the limitless dimensions of love and to not neglect the greatness of the salvation of his Son.

“I bring you good news of great joy!” May the incomparable power of God’s beauty, as seen in Jesus, captivate and bind our hearts ever more to Him.

Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.

Pastor Rusty

Major progress is being made with the renovations at our U. City building! The beams are placed, final electrical and plumbing installations are underway, and we're rolling and trimming the paint as quickly as we can. Our staff moved their offices to the new building and we are thrilled to see our physical space coming together, with expectation of seeing all of you worshiping here very soon!

There are a few ways you can help us as we finish our building move in the next month. Join us in building this move on the foundations of prayer. Please pray that God would cover this project with His grace. We are praying with expectation for safety and health for our construction team; patience for our Kol Rinah friends as they endure the daily noise and construction inconveniences; and for our staff and volunteers who are helping to make sure that our projects are done with thoughtfulness and stewardship.

We have a few remaining days on the calendar for you to come physically build (assemble/move/install/etc,) this church as well. Please take note of the following dates:

12/9 | 1-5p: opportunity to paint, install baseboards, install electrical covers, assemble furniture

12/10 | 9a & 11a services: celebrate the amazing work God has done in our Clayton building

12/10 | right after 11a service: remove trash from Clayton building - LUNCH SERVED

12/16 | 1-5p: configure rooms, help complete projects

12/31 | right after 11a service: move remaining items from Clayton to U.City building - LUNCH SERVED

With questions on any of these dates, or to RSVP for any of these workdays,
please contact Alison at afunke@thejourney.org.

Looking forward to this exciting month of moving ahead!

Heart for Hospitality

The Hosts Ministry is excited to welcome all of you and our new attenders to our new building! Much like moving into a bigger home, it comes with more spaces to set-up, care for and maintain.  Therefore, we are specifically looking for more of our church members to prayerfully consider joining the Hosts!  Whether you prefer people interaction or more logistical tasks, want to serve twice a month or once every few months, we have opportunities across the board.  Here are some examples of roles you could fill as a Host:

Connecting with People:
- Door greeting and passing out bulletins
- Coffee - brewing great coffee and mingling with attenders at our new full service coffee bar
- Sanctuary greeting - welcoming and connecting with attenders before the service
- Connecting new families to the Journey Kids/Students area

Service Logistics:
- Assisting with parking signs and directing cars prior to services
- Setting up the communion table
- Sanctuary aesthetics - ex. setting out and lighting candles and other decor
- Counting offering
- General sanctuary, bathroom and coffee area clean up

Considering and want to learn more?
The Hosts are having a Holiday Gathering + Training at our new U. City building on Sunday, 12/17 from 1-3 pm.  You can come meet the team, learn about how we will be serving in the new space, and enjoy some festive holiday treats!

We invite you to register for the training or please email Alison at afunke@thejourney.org to ask any general ministry questions.

If formally serving is not possible for you right now, do not worry... we all get the opportunity to practice hospitality!  Consider the first three minutes after the service ends. Most of us either head straight to connect with a friend, or if we are new and not connected, we head straight out the door.  The first three minutes after the service ends is one of our biggest opportunities to connect with each other.  Consider this time to turn to someone new, introduce yourself and learn about what brings them to The Journey or how long they have been attending.  Hearing and sharing our stories with each other helps build connection, empathy, and just might be the conversation God uses to bring someone closer to Him and our church!

As the year comes to an end, we want to pause and seek the Lord with our gifts and our finances. As Pastor Jeremy preached in our Engage Culture sermon, God doesn't need our gifts or our money, but He wants to use them and multiply them.

So as we continue to seek to enjoy grace, embody love, and engage our culture, please join us in making a generous year-end gift so we can move our mission forward.
