Hanley Road Family,

We have just entered the season of Advent, which is a season of waiting, expectancy, and longing. During Advent, we reflect on one of the great mysteries of the Christian faith: that in the person of Jesus Christ, heaven touched earth, as God wrapped Himself in flesh some 2,000 years ago. Both then and now, the invitation has been extended to the world to stand in awe and adoration of this marvelous, miraculous, and merciful demonstration of the love of God.

From the beginning, this invitation to adoration has been extended to the noble and the ignoble, to the seemingly righteous and the unrighteous, as God has sought those who would worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Some of the most unlikely worshippers of Jesus were actually among the first. East of Jerusalem, most likely in Persia, there was a group of Magi or “Wise Men” who received from the Lord an invitation to adoration. These men were pagan astrologers, far from what would be considered pious amongst the people of Israel during the time. And yet, it was to these non-Jews that the Lord extends an interstellar invitation to worship the King of Glory who had recently taken up residence in a feeding trough (cf. Matthew 2:1-12). From the beginning, Jesus has been pursuing the unlikely worshippers.

Today, Jesus continues to call to Himself unlikely worshippers of all stripes. Jesus beckons the weak, the wayward, and the wicked to worship at His feet because it is only there that they can find rest for their weary souls (cf. Matthew 11:28-30). While He continues to invite the unlikely worshippers to Himself today, it is not primarily through the movement of planets and supernova that He beckons them. Rather, it is through those of us who live, work, and play amongst those who have yet to respond to His invitation. Today, we are the means through which Jesus seeks to invite the most unlikely to adore Him.

During this season of Advent, I encourage you to invite those around you, especially those who may seem the most unlikely to be worshippers of Jesus, to experience the awe and wonder of Advent together with you. While Jesus hasn’t called you to be the light of a star in the sky, He has called you to be the light of the world that leads even the most unlikely worshippers to adore Him (cf. Matthew 5:13-16).

Across our locations, we are celebrating advent – the season leading up to Christmas. It’s a time to reflect on the significance of Jesus’ birth and the hope we have because of it. We invite you to visit and view our advent guide with daily readings and devotions. Over the next 23 days, rediscover with us the story of Jesus’ birth and the promises He came to fulfill!

Open Table is an opportunity for us to embody love to those in our church family this season! We look forward to the ways that the Lord will bless and build us as we open our homes, extend our tables, and share a meal with one another. If you’re interested in serving as a host or being a guest for a Christmas meal, please email
